Picketers were just spotted in front of the European Street Cafe on Park Street. The well-known eatery is banning the penny starting today and every Tuesday henceforth. Here's more information from today's Times-Union Business section - And the penny ban won’t stop after Thursday. Cashiers won’t take or give pennies for cash transactions every Tuesday thereafter, said Billy Speckman, European Street restaurant manager and marketing manager. Speckman said he’d like to ban the penny every day, but restaurant co-owner Andy Zarka favors the more conservative, test balloon approach. Speckman said he expects customer response to favor banning the penny full-time at the restaurant. All cash transactions will be rounded down to the nearest nickel, in the customer’s favor, Speckman said. If a customer has a food bill of $9.92, for example, the tab, if paid in cash, will be $9.90. Likewise, if it’s $9.94, it will be $9.90. But purchases paid with credit or debit will be charged at face value because no change is taken or given, he said.... Speckman also has a plan for the $5 bill, which Lincoln also adorns. In conjunction with the penny promotion starting Thursday, European Street will offer a 5 percent discount to any cash-paying customer who pays only in $5 bills...." OMG, who still eats at E-street anyway...the last time I was there the food and service sucked.
Last time you ate at all four locations?
Makes me wanna have a hot dog really bad.
That Lincoln looks like Dwight Schrute's brother!
Anon, why would I drag myself to all four locations when the one in my neighborhood sucks?
Ugh. Their beer cheese soup is gross...
I hope the peeps picketing are employees helping with this "stunt".Otherwise they should go back home and finish watching Maury.
Wow. Who pissed in your cornflakes, people? The whole point of the posting was about banning the penny not whether or not you like E. Street's food or not.
If you don't like it, don't go. Those of us who are fans don't want ugly and rude people like you there anyway.
P.S. Great comment, Norm.
Anne,
I'm sorry, I hafta say that E-street is not what it once was...the food has gone downhill, and service, while never that great has moved on to rude.
When I go out, I expect a little more for my money than a couple of crackers on a paper plate...and have to flag down my server for more beer because she's too busy smoking out back.
But even if there was great service, I wouldn't go simply because the menu is so dated...and silly stunts like this one reinforce my view of the establishment as out-of-touch and in need of a makeover.
Point taken, Madeleine.
I guess I just know what to order and know whose section to sit in.
