Cinco de Mayo

Get ready for Cinco de Mayo this Wednesday. There are a ton of things going on like drink specials, block parties, and whatnot. La Nopalera (all locations) is boasting their annual fiesta with margarita and big beer specials, while Mossfire Grill (1537 Margaret Street) hosts their now-annual block party with O’Brothers; complete with 3 outside bars, live music, $3 beers, margaritas, and tequila shots from 6PM to Midnight.

If you can’t make it out on Wednesday night (or you’re ready for round 2) The Island Bar at Cooter Island (3210 Roosevelt Blvd.) is having an Ocho de Mayo (May 8th  , duh) celebration with a hog roast, drink specials, and a $10 bar tab to the person wearing the “best Mexican attire”….that should be a hoot. They open at Noon on Saturday and will have roast pig and other delicacies to eat around 5PM.

Hellmann's Mayonnaise - a bit of history.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as - Sinko De Mayo
