The Skraelings

Jason was watching our local WJCT station yesterday and they showed a very good piece on local band The Skraelings on ”Picture This”. He enjoyed the interviews and performances so much that he thought we should tell you guys about this electronic rock group with 80’s inspiration.

The name “Skraelings” comes from the term that the Norse (Viking) settlers of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic gave to their direct competition, believed to represent one (or more) of three distinct cultures of Canada, Greenland, Labrador and Newfoundland: Dorset, Thule and Point Revenge. The group started out with just two members, Sam and Damon, who relied on synthesizers and guitars to create their music and has now grown to four or five members. Citing Depeche Mode, Blur, Tears for Fears, The Police, Genesis, and other greats as influence, the bands updated electronic sound transcends pure pop and brings these influences into the twenty-first century. Check out their video below from yesterdays show and form your own opinion, then be on the lookout for them around town at different venues like Club TSI, The Ocean Club, and Café 331.

I really liked the first piece but the other two were a bit too hard core for me. I'd love to hear more of their work though.

Hey guys, the 2 additional pieces are from a long-gone UK band of the same name... we had nothing to do with that.
