5 Points Theatre News

Here’s what’s coming up at the 5 Points Theatre:

Tomorrow, October 1st, the theater is premiering 2 documentaries that will be playing for the next week. Kings of Pastry

Imagine a scene never before witnessed: Sixteen French pastry chefs gathered in Lyon for three intense days of mixing, piping and sculpting everything from delicate chocolates to six-foot sugar sculptures in hopes of being declared by President Nicolas Sarkozy one of the best. This is the prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition (Best Craftsmen in France). The blue, white and red striped collar worn on the jackets of the winners is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef – it is a dream and an obsession.

Filmmakers D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus secured exclusive access to shoot this epic, never-before-filmed test of France’s finest artisans. The film follows chef Jacquy Pfeiffer, co-founder of Chicago’s French Pastry School, as he journeys back to his childhood home of Alsace to practice for the contest. Two other finalists are profiled in the film — chef Regis Lazard, who was competing for the second time (he dropped his sugar sculpture the first time), and chef Philippe Rigollot, from Maison Pic, France’s only three-star restaurant owned by a woman.

During the grueling final competition, chefs work under constant scrutiny by master judges and the critical palates of some of the world’s most renowned chefs evaluate their elaborate pastries. Finally, these pastry marathoners racing the clock must hand carry all their creations including their fragile sugar sculptures through a series of rooms to a final buffet area without shattering them. The film captures the high-stakes drama of the competition – passion, sacrifice, disappointment, and joy – in the quest to become one of the KINGS OF PASTRY.

And Winnebago Man

Jack Rebney is a former TV newsman who spent a couple of days in 1988 shooting an industrial film for Winnebago Industries and became a curious kind of legend as a result.

During that promotional shoot, you see, Rebney had a habit of losing his temper: repeatedly, profanely, hilariously. And the (NSFW) footage of his outbursts — edited into a stream of angry swearing and abuse of coworkers and slamming of doors and whatnot — circulated first on videotape and then on the internet until the reality of the man became obscured and Rebney became known only as “Angry RV Salesman” or “The Angriest Man in the World” or “Winnebago Man.” Under that rubric, the footage of his tirades and breakdowns was seen literally millions of times and became a genuine cult sensation, quoted regularly in film and TV comedies and daily discourse.

Among the people fascinated by Rebney was filmmaker Ben Steinbauer, and he set out to discover who Rebney was, whether he was alive, if he had any knowledge of his internet celebrity, and, if so, what he made of all of it. The result is “Winnebago Man,” an often funny and finally poignant documentary about the bizarre nature of modern fame (indeed, infamy) and the healing powers of community, human connection, and, yes, laughter.

The late night movie (showing at 11 with an encore on Sunday, October 3rd, at 3PM) is the cult classic The Room

An American black comedy about love and passion, betrayal and lies. It depicts the depths of friendship and relationships in one’s life and raises life’s real and most asked question: “Can you ever really trust anyone?…

Are you ready to see reflections of your life? A successful banker, Johnny, is madly in love with his fiancé, Lisa, and plans to be married next month.

His plans take a horrid turn when he finds the truth about Lisa and the people surrounding him.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE a documentary and are sure “Kings of Pastry” is a great flick but “Winnebago Man” looks AWESOME!!

In other theater news…we hear that there is a very good chance that the 5 Points Theater will be hosting the Grease Sing-A-Long that we posted about back in May encouraging you guys to vote for Jacksonville as a designated City for the event. Cross your fingers all you Athletic Supporters!
