West Inn Cantina (3644 Saint Johns Ave.) was just OK for last nights staff meeting. The food was a bit lackluster...but what can you really expect from a liquor store/restaurant? We will go back for drinks and appetizers any day, but thats it. The highlight of the evening had to be special gifts we were able to distribute to the staff members who were in attendance, all thanks to Mark - The News Room Chief....who had to scour the ends of Jacksonville to find the last remnants of the latest Local Craze (they are officially called the "Paulas Collection"). Afterwards a few of us popped in to Park Place but only stayed for one beer because our official bartender, Tim, wasn't working last night.** Enjoy the pics.
Staff Meeting 06-13-07 |
**We hope that Tim is still working at Park Place in the wake of several firings as of late.

Not a very fair review. You should give this place another shot. We go there for lunch at Least once a week. Service is always fast, and they have the freshest ingredients. My boss always gets the house salad with Seared Ahi tuna on top (and they give you a healthy portion of sushi grade tuna) I usually get either the fish tacos or the citrus pork carnitas. Also the fresh complimentary chips and salsa are good, as well as the chicken tortilla soup. They always have very good specials as well. Ask anyone that goes there regularly, they serve really good food. I prefer this place to mosfire grill, and we usually alternate between here and Biscotti's for lunch when we eat in the riverside area. Jon.
Ya, I have to agree with Jon, I also love West Inn Cantina, in all its slightly ghetto liquor-store glory.
The food's good, I like the outdoor seating, and the prices aren't bad at all. I really have no complaints with them at all. The biggest plus for me is, it's the best place to go when someone else is dying for mexican but you're not really feeling it. They have regular stuff on the menu too, like chicken sandwiches, etc., that I get if I'm not feeling fajitas or whatnot.
You guys really should give this one another shot.
FYI - West Inn is in Avondale, not Riverside.
Ok, I retract my previous statements about you guys being too hard on the place. I hadn't been there in awhile, and remembered it being pretty good. But we went back the other day for dinner, and it was atrocious. The food was bland and had no flavor, and the service was so-so.
Repeat after me, Mexican food is supposed to be cheap and good. Not bland and pricey. OK, it's not terribly pricey. But I'd put just about any street vending cart from the hispanic district of Miami against this place. Though Jon is correct, there are some good items on the menu. And as an alternative to Biscotti's or Mossfire, it has it's place. I'm just pissed because the old West End Lounge is gone.
The place lost all charm when they renovated. It's a Denny's. The food is Denny's. The bar is Denny's. Where can the old time Avondale drunks go anymore? Wall Street is too far to drive after afternoon lunch highballs...
Aside from that, the place is a landmark. The liquor store is an essential part of the neighborhood. And the drive through pickup is retro enough to be extra cool.
Drive through liquor pickup and on to the (now defunct) drive-in used to be a perfect evening.
Go there, have a few drinks, maybe one of the items Jon mentions. Play a game of pool. Clear out before the horde comes in.
you guys and gals are all amateurs!!
Why review a neighborhood place that everybody loves and you love too?
If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. Simple as that.
You guys don't work for the Times Onion, that's right I said Onion because the journalism and editing just makes me want to cry when I read it, that's why I don't subscribe and read what I want online.
I'd expect better from people who really love their city and everything that happens... good or bad.
Do yourselves all a favor though, stop reviewing, and start enjoying...amateurs
If this restaurant were actually ENJOYABLE, then there wouldn't be a problem, would there?
